Meier describes four phases of the incubation rite used by the sick in search of healing: (1) The patient would take a cleansing bath to purify the soul as well as the body; (2) s/he would make preliminary sacrifices to the god, Asclepius; (3) the sick person would sleep on a couch, called a kline, in the Greek temples; and (4) the god would appear in a dream to heal the patient.
