Then Keeney thought that perhaps it would be a good idea to introduce himself. After all, here they were, all moaning and hugging and vibrating together, and they didn’t know one another’s names. Surely, this was some breach of protocol. If the three shamans did not seem surprised by Keeney’s visit, it was later explained to him that they had also dreamed of this encounter; they had been waiting for him for some time.

We must be led by your old ways of knowing and being. The wings of our hearts make us one. All my deepest respect and love, Brad Keeney visited the desert of the Bushmen many years later. When he arrived, the whole village turned out to dance and celebrate the return of the Big Doctor. The first of those to greet him were Twele and Mantag’s wife, Gabanthate. They embraced and rejoiced in seeing one another again after so many years. “Yes,” Gabanthate said, before Keeney could even ask his question.

Okay,” Jeffrey interrupted the rant. “Enough of this! This is starting to sound like a sermon. I don’t have any problem seeing you as a shaman and wish you would stop apologizing for the term. I understand that people can mean different things by the label, that there are even negative connotations associated with it, in terms of being some sort of drug-addled flake. ’” But Keeney wasn’t quite ready to give up on this point. He is so tired of feeling defensive about the nature of helping, as it is practiced among indigenous peoples around the world.
