Looking back, equal temperament seems like a glaringly obvious idea, but it was only widely accepted after centuries of debate among Europe’s musical and intellectual elite. It met resistance both from religious figures – who called it unholy for doing away with all of God’s “natural” intervals – and from many musicians, who pointed out that, while everything sounded acceptable in equal temperament, nothing sounded perfect.
