The paper company had brought him in, she said, to break the loggers’ strike of ’59. She knew these facts because she had overheard Edgar Soames and George Brown in conversation.

During one of those calls, he informed me that he’d married Emily. ” That was how he put it. I didn’t probe because I did not want to know. He called me at the beginning of summer, 1965. I happened to be home at the time – between jobs. I was going out in the field less and less these days.
